CardChase vs Stunning

a copy of /vs/stunning, taken 2026-09-13

Every tool in this category can retry a failed Stripe charge and send a dunning email. The question a subscription business should ask is narrower: who decides what goes out, and what happens to a card the network has already refused twice?

What Stunning is

Stunning is a long-running dunning tool for Stripe: failed-payment emails, card-expiry notices, and recovery pages, priced as a flat monthly fee rather than a cut of what it recovers.

Banded by MRR, and, unusually for this category, charged as a flat fee rather than a percentage of recoveries. Read from Stunning — Pricing on 2026-09-09.

What CardChase is

CardChase is the recovery loop on its own, running against your own Stripe Billing account. It retries a failed charge and writes the customer, both staged for your approval before anything reaches them.

Moving off Stunning

Stunning and CardChase both work the same Stripe subscription, so nothing about your billing setup moves if you switch: turn off Stunning's campaigns and CardChase's ladder takes over the retries and the customer emails. What does not come across is Stunning's card-expiry notices and hosted recovery pages, which CardChase does not build. Years of Stripe-specific edge-case handling is the other thing you are trusting to a newer product.

Questions

Does Stunning take a percentage of what it recovers? No. Stunning charges a flat monthly fee banded by your MRR, which is the same posture CardChase takes. Percentage-of-recovered pricing is common in this category and both of us avoid it.

What does CardChase do that a dunning email tool does not? It retries the card as well as writing the customer, on one schedule, with both halves behind the same approval and the same kill window, and it refuses to retry a card the network has hard-declined.

WHEN THE LADDER CHANGES

CardChase reads last night's failed charges, stages the retries and stops the ones that will not recover. Which rungs it will stage and how long the kill window runs both change. Leave an address and CardChase writes when they do.
